Lip Gloss Smile

Every morning is Lip Gloss or Chap Stick time here. Kat has this amazing, literally mind blowing collection of cake batter, Skittles, lemon icing flavoured glosses that she decides to use in the morning as her one and only dress up detail for school (and yes – these are all natural coloured). Of course, nothing escapes Kit’s eyes...she watches from the side of the door and the minute Kat puts her gloss back in the room, she picks it up and says – “is this the cake batter one?” or “hmmm...this smells lovely!” This will wind Kat up and we will invariably get late for school and I will either end up downstairs in my slippers or without a sweater in this bitter cold and once we even left Kat’s schoolbag upstairs! (Wonder why we went downstairs in the first place??!)

Today was a lottery for Kit because Kat forgot to put her cake batter flavoured lip gloss so she quickly put it on while waiting for the elevator and handed it back to me for safekeeping (Aha!). Kit looked at me with big, hopeful eyes so I just had to – I simply had to (just like when I gave her Kat's heart shaped lollipop when she was at school) - I opened it and let her use it! I got such glares from Kat I thought my back would burn! On the other hand, Kit was so thrilled she could barely talk (or even walk) after that – she had that divine smile all the way down from the 41st floor! Whenever anyone entered the elevator, she thought all eyes were on her – it was so funny!!

Normally when Kat’s bus pulls into the driveway, Kit is the first one to run and hug and kiss Kat and generally fuss over everything – today she calmly stood outside and mechanically just waved goodbye – I said “Kit, why are you not hugging Kat or saying goodbye nicely?”

Kit: “Mummy, I am. I am giving Kat her favourite lip gloss SMILE”

Kat walked away, UNAMUSED!

By the time they both get back from school today, all will be forgotten... Kat will ring the doorbell...Kit will run to open the door...Kat will hide behind the wall and Boo! her and then Kit will be running behind Kat asking “did you get anything for me?” - some days it’s a book or a little sweet tucked away somewhere and other days its just a hug or a kiss...it just has to be something!
