Kit is 8 now and Kat is turning 15 next month...unbelievable - where did the time go?
It’s a joke in our house that Kat can always be found in front of the mirror straightening her hair! She truly loves her hair and takes extreme good care of it (she has incredible hair too). She’s become organized now in the sense that she now washes and dries and straightens her hair in the morning before school. It’s a lot of work but she manages to do it by getting up early around 6am (I have never ever seen her jump this fast out of bed as it is with the thrice a week early wake up…)

With Kat so fond of her hair, it was but natural for Kit to get more involved with hers. I miss the days when both Kit and Kat had short hair. All they needed was a quick comb in the morning, a hair band or clips and they were ready…it’s a little bit more complicated now, especially with Kit as Kat is able to do everything herself and would NEVER allows me to touch her hair.
Kit is now left with choices of styles she can do and most days it is braids and I have to say I love them. I still feel she looked cuter with shorter hair but I guess it’s the ease of handling that probably makes me say that (or rather influences it). I miss Kit’s short hair but I know very soon, I’ll be missing this braiding routine when she gets deeper in love with the hair styling following Kat’s footsteps…

The appointment was for yesterday but the preparation started a couple of weeks ago. All the right friends were texted, all information gathered from the internet. Ready, Set, Go...

I must say times have moved on since my days…I had my laser treatment done a few years ago and have not had the need to visit a wax centre for the last several years now. I was amazed at the self drying wax that you peeled off the skin, just like that! (no more cloth strips) – I was with Kat in the room and I could not help but stare at the wax wonder…very neat indeed!
A lot of pain for Kat followed by a day or so of feeling very strange and wobbly (in her own words) but now she is fine and back to normal – of course the end result was marvellous – she cannot wait for the next one!

I look around Kat’s room and see Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and Victoria Justice everywhere – I like them all too except that ALL of them have beautiful, long hair and have Kat believing that this style is very ‘in’ and here to stay. Personally, I and Papa think that she looks much smarter with short hair but when you have an 11 year old with opinions and confidence of her own, you have to let go and give some degree of independence for them to live with their little decisions.
There was a time when both Kit Kat had the same haircut as me (a French Bob) and everywhere we went, they were the mini-me. At least Kit still has the “same as me” cut and she does look adorable (not to forget smart and more comfortable in this heat!) – Even Kit has started asking for long hair and the only reason she goes for a haircut and forgets about her original plan is the ‘lollipop’ that she gets there! (So far so good)
Well (*sigh*)...Not all of us are blessed with enviable tresses and as is the case with Kat, she does not like her hair so much after she’s washed them (she has only publicly admitted this now) – they have natural waves and this is the reason why she needs to tie her hair almost all the time...
Glad to know, I’m not the only mum who is freaking out with my daughter’s long hair. I know of other mums complaining about similar issues with their daughter’s hair and how they wish for them to get a shorter haircut (easy to maintain, no fuss style I hear?)
I think the time is coming or will come soon (fingers crossed)...Kat was visibly upset with her hair last night and Papa and I gave her opinions of our own (very daring I must admit) and instead of stopping us, Kat was actually contemplating...baby steps and pure motherly instinct maybe but I feel we will be making a trip to the hairdresser before school reopens (Yay!) – we may be praying silently for a certain decision but in the end we will accept whatever Kat decides to do – like we always tell her – “We will never lie to you…we will only tell you the facts and you decide what you want to do – we can guide, not force our opinions”.
After all it’s Kat’s hair, long or short, Kat’s decision…she will get the last word. That’s that.

Normally when Kat’s bus pulls into the driveway, Kit is the first one to run and hug and kiss Kat and generally fuss over everything – today she calmly stood outside and mechanically just waved goodbye – I said “Kit, why are you not hugging Kat or saying goodbye nicely?”
Kit: “Mummy, I am. I am giving Kat her favourite lip gloss SMILE”
Kat walked away, UNAMUSED!
By the time they both get back from school today, all will be forgotten... Kat will ring the doorbell...Kit will run to open the door...Kat will hide behind the wall and Boo! her and then Kit will be running behind Kat asking “did you get anything for me?” - some days it’s a book or a little sweet tucked away somewhere and other days its just a hug or a kiss...it just has to be something!

The one thing I like carrying and care about are handbags – am I fussy? Depends how much time I have - although I think I lost the time luxury factor a few years ago. For me, it is important to have a smart handbag and my favourite brand is Coach. I always seem to find what I’m looking for – quick and easy. Bliss!
Here comes Kat into the picture – she seems to be an interesting mix of me and my sister. She has this passion for handbags (she has a pretty decent collection) but the FUSS with which the selection is made is how my sister used to pick shoes. I can’t help making the connection.
Kat has a selection of handbags which were of the ‘kid/maybe tween’ level – the most sophisticated ones being a Tommy Hilfiger and the latest a pink Juicy Couture from her Aunt. So when she went shopping for a Coach handbag for ME , it was heart breaking to see her look at the price tags of all the smaller handbags (her size) and then put them back instantly. I could see her posing with them in the corner of the shop too. So after I had selected mine, I had a quick word with Papa (who is the last person to object to anything for Kat anyway!) and we decided it was time to surprise Kat with her first Coach. So we started looking at the handbag section she was searching through at first and then we broke the news that she could actually buy one for herself.

Anyhow, breaking the news was simple – selecting the handbag was the big thing – Kat must have tried every handbag in the store before finalising (here she is slightly different from my sister who would try all the shoes and still move on to the next store in search of better buys – so bugging!) Also amazing is the patience that Papa suddenly showed abundance of when it came to Kat – he patiently selected handbag after handbag for her – asked her to pose in it while he commented – all the while I just hurried them along and panicked, in vain. All of this patience (of Papa’s) somehow vanishes when its my turn to buy things – Kit will suddenly turn wild, time will become precious in an instant, almost always parking will be an issue or Kat will be all around me hounding me why I am buying so many things when she has so few etc etc.
All okay and Coach is now HOME. Mine is slung on my shoulder carelessly for every meaningless errand –Kat’s coach is special...her new best friend. Stays in her closest most days – comes to life over the weekend and gets a lot of love.
Surprisingly Kit didn’t ask for one – she was content looking at herself in all the mirrors or maybe she was just in one of her forgiving moods – Time will tell...
