Pre Birthday Gifts!
Posted By SLK on Friday, January 30, 2015   { 0 Comment(s) }
Now, hard as it may seem to me to imagine, Kat is actually going to turn 15 next week...yes, that's true!
For the last few years, it been about hair with her - first they had to be at same level (journey from bob to long hair is a LONG one), then they had to be cut every few weeks to avoid split ends and of course, then came the phase where hair had to be straightened every day or so...(we're still stuck in this phase!)

Given all the hair obsession we have in the family, it was no surprise that Kat decided to order 3 different types of hair brushes, combs etc and that package was delivered yesterday from Sephora.

Apart from the hair accessories and other stuff, what makes this package really unique is the fact that this is Kat's birthday gift to herself. The thing is that, every year, Kat wants money for her birthday so she can then spend it the way she wishes. Its a win-win for everyone as it works not to spend hours trying to figure out what would please a teenager and the gift of money never fails to impress:)
birthday gift
So, this package delivered yesterday has the stuff that Kat wanted for her birthday and because of all the tempting hair brushes it has, she also REALLY wanted to use them.

She had this idea previously where I should gift wrap everything so she feels like she is getting a gift on her birthday. Since last night, she had been debating if she
should use any of her products or wait till next week. In the end, patience broke and this morning, she sampled all of them and was very happy indeed!

Here's to Kat - HAPPY BIRTHDAY and no matter how hard you try to seem grown up, I know you are still a baby at heart who can't control the urge to unwrap presents!

Hairy tale!

Time flies...and yes, that is no excuse for being away from this blog for so long but honestly, time flies!

Kit is 8 now and Kat is turning 15 next month...unbelievable - where did the time go?

It’s a joke in our house that Kat can always be found in front of the mirror straightening her hair! She truly loves her hair and takes extreme good care of it (she has incredible hair too). She’s become organized now in the sense that she now washes and dries and straightens her hair in the morning before school. It’s a lot of work but she manages to do it by getting up early around 6am (I have never ever seen her jump this fast out of bed as it is with the thrice a week early wake up…)

I love short hair

With Kat so fond of her hair, it was but natural for Kit to get more involved with hers. I miss the days when both Kit and Kat had short hair. All they needed was a quick comb in the morning, a hair band or clips and they were ready…it’s a little bit more complicated now, especially with Kit as Kat is able to do everything herself and would NEVER allows me to touch her hair.

Kit is now left with choices of styles she can do and most days it is braids and I have to say I love them. I still feel she looked cuter with shorter hair but I guess it’s the ease of handling that probably makes me say that (or rather influences it). I miss Kit’s short hair but I know very soon, I’ll be missing this braiding routine when she gets deeper in love with the hair styling following Kat’s footsteps…

The first

My girls are hairy! They take on Papa but it is what it is. For 12+ long years, I kept Kat pacified that we would work on getting her legs waxed in high school...she always had this hope that one day, she would be hair free! So imagine her surprise when I agreed to get it done in this summer break (3 years ahead of schedule!)

The appointment was for yesterday but the preparation started a couple of weeks ago. All the right friends were texted, all information gathered from the internet. Ready, Set, Go...

waxWe had the appointment at the European Wax Centre, just two blocks away and those 2 blocks were probably the longest ones for Kat. She was so nervous and kept checking with me if it would hurt. Of course it does hurt but how do you explain the nature of the pain to someone who has no idea about it. So, I did prepare her a bit but the rest she had to learn:(

I must say times have moved on since my days…I had my laser treatment done a few years ago and have not had the need to visit a wax centre for the last several years now. I was amazed at the self drying wax that you peeled off the skin, just like that! (no more cloth strips) – I was with Kat in the room and I could not help but stare at the wax wonder…very neat indeed!

A lot of pain for Kat followed by a day or so of feeling very strange and wobbly (in her own words) but now she is fine and back to normal – of course the end result was marvellous – she cannot wait for the next one!

Into the new year 2012

Not been writing for so excuse really...except that I am raising 2 girls with varied personalities and OMG what attitudes...not to mention the recent bouts of muscle sprains (Trip 1 skiing cancelled) followed by pneumonia(!) (Trip 2 Mexico cancelled) followed by Penicillin allergy (Trip 3 London almost cancelled) and several instances of UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) in between – I am so exhausted!! Here’s hoping for a healthy and happy 2012 to one and all:)

Bat Mitzvah The recent craze in our house is Kat’s invitation to a Bat Mitzvah – I have heard that it is the most important event for a Jewish family. We’ve never been to one (since it is celebrated when a girl turns 12 and now Kat’s friends are reaching this milestone slowly). I have no doubt that this is big deal for the family involved but in our house, this first Bat Mitzvah for Kat’s friend is such a big deal, I mean SUCH A BIG DEAL! We have had numerous discussions on the gift (Kat comes up with a gift idea almost every single day after some conversations with friends). A dress in white was specifically bought for this occasion and only recently have the golden ballet flats arrived. There were talks about getting hair done but I think Kat realised she was pushing me too far and she has forgotten this for now (I hope!)

At one point, Kat got so carried away with all the fun her friend was going to have, she asked me: “Mummy, can I have a Bat Mitzvah?”!! I almost fell off my chair...

Funny enough, Kit has not realised all this fuss (yet!) – once she figures out that Kat is going for something special, there will be confrontations and arguments about why her friends do not have Bat Mitzvahs yet (they’re only 5 year olds now!) and that IT IS NOT FAIR!!

Updates on the dress and shoes next...

The Hair Dilemma
Posted By SLK on Friday, July 08, 2011   { 0 Comment(s) }
It’s taken Kat a good year and a half to get rid of the layers and grow her hair and she has now reached the point where she can make a nice ponytail or a neat braid (without hair sticking out). Of course, she does not want two braids (although easier to make with her hair) as she does not want to look cute but she wants to look pretty (?!) I am convinced that this must be a preteen thing but the obsession with hair is currently quite HOT in our house (second only to Kat’s love for lip gloss!)

Selena Gomez,Taylor Swift, Victoria Justice

I look around Kat’s room and see Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and Victoria Justice everywhere – I like them all too except that ALL of them have beautiful, long hair and have Kat believing that this style is very ‘in’ and here to stay. Personally, I and Papa think that she looks much smarter with short hair but when you have an 11 year old with opinions and confidence of her own, you have to let go and give some degree of independence for them to live with their little decisions.

There was a time when both Kit Kat had the same haircut as me (a French Bob) and everywhere we went, they were the mini-me. At least Kit still has the “same as me” cut and she does look adorable (not to forget smart and more comfortable in this heat!) – Even Kit has started asking for long hair and the only reason she goes for a haircut and forgets about her original plan is the ‘lollipop’ that she gets there! (So far so good)

Well (*sigh*)...Not all of us are blessed with enviable tresses and as is the case with Kat, she does not like her hair so much after she’s washed them (she has only publicly admitted this now) – they have natural waves and this is the reason why she needs to tie her hair almost all the time...

Glad to know, I’m not the only mum who is freaking out with my daughter’s long hair. I know of other mums complaining about similar issues with their daughter’s hair and how they wish for them to get a shorter haircut (easy to maintain, no fuss style I hear?)

I think the time is coming or will come soon (fingers crossed)...Kat was visibly upset with her hair last night and Papa and I gave her opinions of our own (very daring I must admit) and instead of stopping us, Kat was actually steps and pure motherly instinct maybe but I feel we will be making a trip to the hairdresser before school reopens (Yay!) – we may be praying silently for a certain decision but in the end we will accept whatever Kat decides to do – like we always tell her – “We will never lie to you…we will only tell you the facts and you decide what you want to do – we can guide, not force our opinions”.

After all it’s Kat’s hair, long or short, Kat’s decision…she will get the last word. That’s that.
