Lip Gloss Smile

Every morning is Lip Gloss or Chap Stick time here. Kat has this amazing, literally mind blowing collection of cake batter, Skittles, lemon icing flavoured glosses that she decides to use in the morning as her one and only dress up detail for school (and yes – these are all natural coloured). Of course, nothing escapes Kit’s eyes...she watches from the side of the door and the minute Kat puts her gloss back in the room, she picks it up and says – “is this the cake batter one?” or “hmmm...this smells lovely!” This will wind Kat up and we will invariably get late for school and I will either end up downstairs in my slippers or without a sweater in this bitter cold and once we even left Kat’s schoolbag upstairs! (Wonder why we went downstairs in the first place??!)

Lip Gloss Collection
Today was a lottery for Kit because Kat forgot to put her cake batter flavoured lip gloss so she quickly put it on while waiting for the elevator and handed it back to me for safekeeping (Aha!). Kit looked at me with big, hopeful eyes so I just had to – I simply had to (just like when I gave her Kat's heart shaped lollipop when she was at school) - I opened it and let her use it! I got such glares from Kat I thought my back would burn! On the other hand, Kit was so thrilled she could barely talk (or even walk) after that – she had that divine smile all the way down from the 41st floor! Whenever anyone entered the elevator, she thought all eyes were on her – it was so funny!!

Normally when Kat’s bus pulls into the driveway, Kit is the first one to run and hug and kiss Kat and generally fuss over everything – today she calmly stood outside and mechanically just waved goodbye – I said “Kit, why are you not hugging Kat or saying goodbye nicely?”

Kit: “Mummy, I am. I am giving Kat her favourite lip gloss SMILE”

Kat walked away, UNAMUSED!

By the time they both get back from school today, all will be forgotten... Kat will ring the doorbell...Kit will run to open the door...Kat will hide behind the wall and Boo! her and then Kit will be running behind Kat asking “did you get anything for me?” - some days it’s a book or a little sweet tucked away somewhere and other days its just a hug or a kiss...it just has to be something!

Happy 'Valumtimes' Day!
Posted By SLK on Tuesday, February 15, 2011   { 2 Comment(s) }
After a super charged 2 day school trip to D.C., Kat was back home on Friday and the rest of the weekend (ok, most of it!) was spent preparing for Valentine’s Day at school.
There is a rule in school (for both Kit and Kat) that you are not obliged to give out valentines but if you do decide to, then you have to give one each to the entire class – Kat was not very happy with this as at the age of 11 you don’t really want to write out valentines to boys unless you really want to! But since her friends were going to hand them out anyway, she felt she must do so too...however the main argument was not that, it was over the type of valentines – Kat wanted to buy them but she did not want to spend her own money – how cheeky is that? Imagine getting pocket money every week and then asking us to spend money for her friends’ valentines??
It sounded hugely ridiculous and when she did shed a few tears over it and still nothing happened (which surprised her too) – she came up with a plan (finally!) – Lets do it in-house – YAY!!

All the commotion got Kit interested in the whole thing (she had no clue about it before this) – she was ecstatic that Mummy was going to do a project with her now…Kat always has an endless supply of coloured papers and pencils – she is our stationery cupboard. We made some cute little coloured heart shaped valentines for Kit’s class and Kit got so tired of writing that she could do only 5 at a time...it did take a while to finish the 20 cards!Heart Cards
Kat did her 27 pink hearts on red coloured paper with different messages for girls, boys and teachers (some patience she has!)

Then we had another BIG problem. Kat’s school had allowed candy to school on Valentine’s Day but Kit was not allowed. Kit made me promise that I would not allow Kat any candy and it broke my heart when I taped a Sour patch to each of Kat’s Valentine when Kit went to bed. (Things you have to do for peace at home!)

On Feb 14th, Kit and Kat got up excitedly and got ready for school – Kit was bubbling with excitement and wishing Happy Valumtimes Day to one and all. She even handed cards to Kat’s Bus Matron and lady Driver. It got her all ready for the day…this is the first time she has been so excited about Valentine’s Day...maybe next year she can even learn to pronounce it correctly!

Snowwhite 3D Sun Catcher Kit Kit Kat came back home with loads of Valentines from school (Kat even came back with chocolates which Kit does not know about), they both got a 3-D Sun Catcher painting kit from us and I got a surprise flowers delivery from them all!! Tinkerbell3D Sun Catcher Kit

It’s all about love...Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. Hope you all had a wonderful Day!

The Unwanted Gift
Posted By SLK on Thursday, January 06, 2011   { 0 Comment(s) }
That time of the year is fast approaching when I just want to be a child again...dream of my perfect birthday – wait for my loved ones to wish me and feel extra special on my special day...of course the candles on the birthday cake are still one or two (space on the cake due to age constrictions!)

Birthday Gift When I was young, I would always gift my mother chocolates or sweets on her birthday as I knew she would instantly gift them back to me :-) so the following conversation between Kit Kat and Me at the dinner table should come as no surprise...

Kat: “Mummy, can I borrow $200 from you?”

Me: “What??!!” “Are you kidding me? You want to borrow $200 from me for my birthday gift? Forget it.”

Kat (visibly upset as she loves her money and can be often seen counting her notes in her spare time – she is SO looking forward to turning 13 and getting her own credit card – can’t wait!): “It’s ok – I’ll have to think of something else.”

This think of something else probably means that Kat will (easily) convince Papa to get an advance on her pocket money (for the rest of the year?) – In any case I can count on a decent card from her.

Now, Kit has been listening to this exchange between me and Kat and feels that she must contribute to my birthday. It’s a prestige issue now.

Kit: “Mummy, I really want to give you something on your birthday.”

Me (very touched): “It’s ok Kit. It’s very sweet but you can give with Kat together. (I get stares and glares from Kat!)

Kit: “No, I really want to give you something. Can I give you a toy that I DO NOT WANT?”

Me (taken aback): “Why would you do that?”

Kit: “Because if I give you something I want, then I will really miss it so maybe I should give you something that I do not like!”

Now, who can argue with that??

So as I get older (definitely not wiser) in the next few days, I look forward to receiving a mystery gift – will it be a battered toy or will it be teddy bear or a doll that needs lots of love?

As they say...it’s the thought that counts!

Sunny Mismanagement
Posted By SLK on Wednesday, September 15, 2010   { 0 Comment(s) }
I LOVE my sunglasses – actually it’s more of a necessity for me than a fashion accessory...the day I venture out in the sun without mine I am doomed – a bright, smiling sun and hunger are triggers for a migraine that will never forgive me for days. Kat has glasses and she even got the photo chromatic ones so that she could have her sunglasses in the sun and the same ones turn normal in the shade. However, after seeing me being so much in love with mine, she has now finally got a pair of prescription sunglasses for herself. She enjoys wearing them but it’s a big hassle for me as I always end up carrying them – it’s an expensive pair (prescription sunglasses always are) and I am so worried that somewhere in the process of exchanging the normal pair with the sunglasses, she will either lose or break this one – and I feel much safer guarding them! Totally my fault – no one else to blame...

Our sunglasses Kat copies me and gets her pair and who does Kit copy? You guessed it – Kat! Kit has not one, but 2 pair of sunglasses to choose from and some days she will not leave the house if both Kat and I are wearing sunglasses and she isn’t...so here we are, three girls ready to face the sun with sun block, sunglasses and sun hats and guess what? the only man in our house will not wear sunglasses. He has the most jaw dropping Maui Jim sunglasses that have seen daylight only a dozen times in the last few years and are safely stashed away in the glove compartment in the car.

Anyhow, last weekend when we were checking out from Hershey’s Park (wow! what a sweet treat weekend that was…) I came back to the car and it was clear that Kat had been messing around with my handbag to search for her sunglasses.

Me (jokingly): “Looks like someone’s been messing around in my bag. I can see some mismanagement here in my bag.”

Kat ignores me. Kit on the other hand thinks that I have found something in my bag so she immediately takes her thumb out of her mouth in anticipation and says: “Can I have it please?”

Me (perplexed): “What?”

Kit: “What you found in the bag. That mis thing.”

That really gave us all a good laugh...Kit on the other hand, adjusted her sunglasses and hat and carried on sucking her thumb in the car seat totally unimpressed by our laughter (like something silly grown ups do from time to time!)

How about a shower today?
Posted By SLK on Friday, August 06, 2010   { 0 Comment(s) }
When Kat was little, we had a hand-held shower, so I remember her graduating from the bath to the shower quite early on. The shower we had also had adjustable strength so Kat discovered the joys of showering much earlier on and never looked back (of course having a long bath with her toys is always a luxury which she still manages once in a while and can’t stop gloating about how much her skin glows after that!)

With Kit, things have been REALLY different – she’s always loved a bath. With dozens of toys around her, so many drama lessons, so many swimming lessons have taken place in that bath of ours! Her skin gets slightly red and itchy after being in the water for a bit long so Kit’s bath is not longer than 10 minutes on an average but even then, those 10 minutes are the most cherished moments as we race to the bathroom every day (Yes, we do that!)

Post swimming is the only time when Kit will step into the shower with Papa and she will scream! She does not like the shower one bit. For one, it’s not hand-held so you cannot play with it or do it your way and secondly it comes down on you full strength from the top – FULL STOP! So I had given up all hope of Kit graduating to the cleaner, happier world of showering in the near future (at least) when she came up to me yesterday and said:

Kit: “I think I will have a shower today like Kat.”

Me: “Really? Yippee! Mummy is going to give you Kat’s shower cap as a gift. Let’s go…”

The shower and the cap!Now she gets really excited. Show them some enthusiasm and they are on the verge on getting hyper so quickly. When will I get the balance right?

So we both race to the bathroom. At first Kit is a bit sceptical about her decision and fusses around with the shower cap, checking out the shower cubicle, looking up at the shower (like our handyman does). Then she finally steps in (I marvel at her trust in me) –she is convinced that the only way to shower is to have her back face it and there is no way to convince her to face it the right way. When all my efforts fail, I go to Kat.

Me: “Kit is having her first shower all by herself.”

Kat: “That’s weird!” (Everything is weird right now for Kat as she’s reading and munching strawberries)

Anyhow she follows me disinterestedly but her expression changes when she sees Kit: “Oh mummy, she looks so cute!” So there is Kit with a cupcake shower cap on, head down, arms firmly by her side, still back facing the shower! Of course, there is NOTHING Kat cannot fix for Kit (when she wants to). She tells Kit how much fun it is to have a shower and how she drew hearts with her fingers on the shower door when she was Kit’s age and it feels nice when you actually face the water…so Kit who will do anything for Kat DOES IT!

Kat’s inspiration goes a long way every time – their love is enviable at times. Numerous hearts on the shower door, silly songs and hip hop dances later, a happy and victorious Kit walks out of the shower with promises of a shower every day. JOY!!
