Kit for Kat!

You've got mail!

Every morning, Kit comes out of her room and looks at her mailbox placed right by her door...

“What? No mail? Again!” she says and then turns to Kat, Papa or me “why didn’t you write me a message?”

After a (God) promise of doing it tonight , all is fine and a major situation averted. Phew!

Kit's mailbox

So this is the reason each one of us can be seen writing little notes for Kit at night – to ensure that she has mail every morning.

Mama's note My messages are usually small (unless there is a specific demand for a BIG card) written out on little post-it notes with a heart, flower or just ‘Mama loves you’ kinds.

Kat's note Of all the messages, Kit most eagerly looks forward to Kat’s messages; not only for the heartfelt thoughts but for the materialistic side of them (after all, she’s only 4yrs old!) – Kat will always attach something with her note – an eraser, a sticker – a little something every single time!

Papa is the one with the longest messages – he writes few but he writes big cards always addressed to ‘My Little Princess’ and from ‘Papa Prince’.

We all are creative in this set up as well so some days Kit will get paper goodies – a fan (me), aeroplane (Papa) and basket (Kat) in her mailbox and her reaction is instantly gratifying.

Kit's message This message business is not one-sided either – Kit spends a lot of time writing for us or making cards and pictures for her family. Very often, we enter our rooms and see a card or picture on the floor (that was sneakily delivered to us).

Also, now that Kit is learning to read, it is indeed heart warming to see her read her messages, all by herself.

Nice change from the good ol’ keyboard, thanks to Kit, the joy of writing by hand is being rediscovered in our house...

Magic of Bermuda
Posted By SLK on Tuesday, July 05, 2011   { 1 Comment(s) }
What a relaxing holiday it was...just back from Bermuda and I can still feel the warm (at times rather hot!) sun on my back. It was a much needed vacation and Papa got to spend quality time with Kit Kat...MUCH MUCH NEEDED!

Fairmont Hamilton Princess It’s interesting how a hotel with buffet breakfast can change its ratings (for Kit Kat) from a great hotel to THE BEST. (I saw a similar look in their eyes when we went on the Cruise last year and we saw all that food for the first time...) I think it’s not just the food but the way it’s laid out, easy access etc. When it comes to actual eating, there is so much confusion (especially with Kit dropping cutlery almost all the time, losing her napkin, fighting to make my tea endlessly) that in the end, the breakfast is not so successful!

Crystal Caves When we went to the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, we were sceptical about how Kit would react to the tour, hundreds of steps and the darkness associated with it, combined with the excessive heat. As it happens, in situations like this I trust Papa more than myself (my school friends can vouch for my lack of balance!) so we began the journey with trepidation. Kat was great and once you tell her to go in a certain manner, she actually listens to you. Kit, on the other hand, does not and insisted on taking 2 steps at a time (my heart lietrally skipping a beat every time she did that). Once we made it down to the depths of the cave and while I was trying to look at the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites (also trying to figure out which was what), Kat was busy clicking pictures with her iPhone (I, simultaneously fearing that this was the last time I was seeing it before it was sacrificed to this beautiful island!). Papa was so busy listening to the tour guide that Kit found the perfect thing to do – in the quietness and serenity of these magical caves, she was on the lookout for mermaids! She kept asking us if we could see any and then she started pretending she could see one swim by – very soon we had several members of our tour playing along with her. Once someone told her, he had seen two mermaids behind that rock in the water – Kit was convinced forever! With 2 pee stops, endless steps, great photo shoot opportunities and the magical mermaid mystery, the caves were a big hit with the girls...

Horseshoe Bay One thing I truly miss about Bermuda is the beach. On second thoughts, I think I miss it more because Kit and Kat miss it. I’m not such a great lover of excessive sun (I begin to itch especially on my hands and the sun induced migraines turn me into someone my family don’t seem to like!) but the play time with the girls on the beach is so much fun! Couple it with the pink sand beach of Horseshoe Bay and this became SUPER fun this year. This year would also be the official landmark year for Kit as it was in 2011 in Bermuda that Kit learned to play in the waves on her own. Of course, Papa and Kat were always around and near her (I was always behind!) but this was the time that Kit was not being held but was enjoying the waves on her own and OMG, the fun she had, it was written all over her smiley face! If it was not for the rip current and the rain, they could have stayed in the water all day – a true growing and glowing moment for Kit! Well done!

July 4 fireworks Back at home in NY…perfect finale to the trip were the July 4th fireworks that we watched from our room (one of the joys of being on a 40+ floor is that you don’t have to rush to the roof to get the best space anymore!) What an amazing job by Macy’s – those fireworks are great and Kit watched them wide-eyed this year (I think she was too sleepy last year)

Days well spent, sun well soaked and some great bonding time for the entire family – Goodbye Bermuda – we MISS you already!

P.S. Kat is SO happy we made it back home safe…the Bermuda Triangle was her biggest concern before we left and the hot item on her ‘to-do prayers’ every night!

Number Word Quest
Posted By SLK on Friday, June 24, 2011   { 0 Comment(s) }
Kit’s vocabulary is being enriched every moment – there is so much to learn!
She tries very hard to use all newly acquired words in her regular conversation SO we usually have (wise) comments like “I can see the constellation” during lunch time or “I am very depressed” when there is an argument with Kat.

What I find most interesting is her age calculation. If anyone asks her age and I say 4 years, Kit insists on saying that she is 4 and a quarter! Also, her goal is to be same age as Dora (!) who is (as per Kit) 5 years old (not a bad guess!) and Diego is 11years (surprisingly the same age as Kat)

Bed Time Story Cover ...and so the word (and number) quest continues and in this journey we come across words like never before – “I goed (‘went’) there” , “I putted (put) it in my cupboard”.

The other day I got a hand made book which read “Bad Tme Stores” – yes, you guessed it – BED TIME STORIES!

The Unnecessary Lie
Posted By SLK on Wednesday, March 09, 2011   { 2 Comment(s) }
Not sure why but whenever the girls have a day off from school I feel a wee bit relaxed. I still have the alarm set for 6am, I still make tea for both of us (me and Papa) as usual and I still stagger my way through the morning routine as usual and of course, Kit wakes up early (even earlier on non-school days!) but for some bizarre reason, my mind is psyched to believe that I am not stressed because there is no SCHOOL!

Kit is generally very excited about dropping Kat off in the morning and I cannot remember a day since Kit started school last year when it was the other way round...so that makes TODAY a very special day indeed...Kat had a Conference Day in school so she was overjoyed with her day off while Kit had normal school (they FINALLY realised they had given too many snow days away!)

Kit is very perceptive – we couldn't just tell her that Kat was staying home (I mean, which sibling can bear to see the other one stay home with mummy?) so we made a little plan – we told Kit that Kat’s school teacher was running a little late so her bus was late, blah, blah... and hence, Kat would drop her first (clever!!).
Kit was super excited and I felt a little guilty about making up this story but I did think it would do more good than harm, so I guess mums are allowed to do this, right?

We were all in good spirits, all was going fine and we were waiting for Kit’s bus when the doorman asked Kat why she didn’t go to school (as part of general chit chat) and I boldly answered for her: “She has a holiday at school” (I should learn to keep my mouth shut!!!)

What did I do?Kit looked at me and then at Kat. Kat looked at me as if she couldn’t believe how dumb I was! (That I told you so look when your kids get older and start to think mums have lost it and today I did think I had!)

Was it that pressure of ending the conversation quickly that made the truth come out or was it the pressure of getting Kit to school or was it just the rush in general or just plain craziness? Whatever it was, I was not prepared for that look in Kit’s eyes.
Of course, I’m a mum and I quickly picked myself up from where I had stumbled (too low in my eyes I think!) and started the story about how Kat’s teacher was too late and now they might give a day off and so on...don’t think Kit believed me – she just kept quiet. I even gave her my cell phone to play with (a really special treat)

Finally, the bus came and Kit was on her way to it. She looked back and said to Kat –“You’re staying home with mummy today, aren’t you?”

I looked at Kit – “Maybe but remember I love you.” (Too tired to lie anymore. Could even feel a migraine coming on now...)

All is fine Kit (instantly): “more than Kat?”

“You do, don’t you? I know you do”

And she was off on the bus, sitting contentedly by the window, blowing kisses to both Kat and me, happy in the belief that I love her more than Kat...such innocence...such a carefree life...how I wish I was 4 years old!

Happy 'Valumtimes' Day!
Posted By SLK on Tuesday, February 15, 2011   { 2 Comment(s) }
After a super charged 2 day school trip to D.C., Kat was back home on Friday and the rest of the weekend (ok, most of it!) was spent preparing for Valentine’s Day at school.
There is a rule in school (for both Kit and Kat) that you are not obliged to give out valentines but if you do decide to, then you have to give one each to the entire class – Kat was not very happy with this as at the age of 11 you don’t really want to write out valentines to boys unless you really want to! But since her friends were going to hand them out anyway, she felt she must do so too...however the main argument was not that, it was over the type of valentines – Kat wanted to buy them but she did not want to spend her own money – how cheeky is that? Imagine getting pocket money every week and then asking us to spend money for her friends’ valentines??
It sounded hugely ridiculous and when she did shed a few tears over it and still nothing happened (which surprised her too) – she came up with a plan (finally!) – Lets do it in-house – YAY!!

All the commotion got Kit interested in the whole thing (she had no clue about it before this) – she was ecstatic that Mummy was going to do a project with her now…Kat always has an endless supply of coloured papers and pencils – she is our stationery cupboard. We made some cute little coloured heart shaped valentines for Kit’s class and Kit got so tired of writing that she could do only 5 at a time...it did take a while to finish the 20 cards!Heart Cards
Kat did her 27 pink hearts on red coloured paper with different messages for girls, boys and teachers (some patience she has!)

Then we had another BIG problem. Kat’s school had allowed candy to school on Valentine’s Day but Kit was not allowed. Kit made me promise that I would not allow Kat any candy and it broke my heart when I taped a Sour patch to each of Kat’s Valentine when Kit went to bed. (Things you have to do for peace at home!)

On Feb 14th, Kit and Kat got up excitedly and got ready for school – Kit was bubbling with excitement and wishing Happy Valumtimes Day to one and all. She even handed cards to Kat’s Bus Matron and lady Driver. It got her all ready for the day…this is the first time she has been so excited about Valentine’s Day...maybe next year she can even learn to pronounce it correctly!

Snowwhite 3D Sun Catcher Kit Kit Kat came back home with loads of Valentines from school (Kat even came back with chocolates which Kit does not know about), they both got a 3-D Sun Catcher painting kit from us and I got a surprise flowers delivery from them all!! Tinkerbell3D Sun Catcher Kit

It’s all about love...Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. Hope you all had a wonderful Day!
