Baby's first year : ApgarTest
A TO Z OF COMMON CONCERNS
- Apgar Test
All babies undergo an Apgar test just a minute after birth. This test is repeated after 5 minutes and most babies score better in the second test if they didn't get a great score in the first one. Babies who score 7-10 in the test are in good to excellent condition. Babies with a score of 4-6 are in fair condition and may need some resuscitative measures. Babies scoring under 4 need emergency treatment.
An apgar table looks like this:
| Score | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| Appearance | pale or white | pink body with blue extremities | pink |
| Heart rate | not detectable | below 100 | over 100 |
| Reflex irritability | no response to stimulation | grimace | cough, sneeze |
| Muscle tone | flaccid | some movement of extremities | moving |
| Respiration | none | weak,gasping, irregular | crying, regular |
