You will have the following blood tests sometime during the first trimester (mostly at the time of your booking-in appointment). All tests are performed using one blood sample.
Remember, these tests are only offered to you and you can refuse them. However, in the interest of you and your baby's safety, these tests are highly recommended:
- Blood group: to determine your blood group as A, B, O or AB
- Rhesus status: whether you are Rhesus positive or negative. Click here for more information on Rhesus disease
- Blood count: to determine conditions like anaemia
- Sickle cell anaemia
- Thalassaemia
- Random Blood sugar: this tests for diabetes
- Rubella or German measles
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B
- HIV
