| While continuing to
monitor the position through the scan, a fine needle is
passed through the wall of the abdomen. (Sometimes a fine tube may be passed through the vagina into the womb). |

| A sample of the chorionic tissue(fingers of tissue that form part of the placenta) is extracted through the needle or tube. | |
| The chromosomes in the sample are studied to provide conclusive result |
