Useful Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful Tips

1. A full bladder will often help with signal

2. Be sure to use enough BabySonic Ultrasound Gel between the probe and skin as this dense liquid gel helps to pick-up the sound waves and relay baby's heartbeat clearly. Make sure the probe has good contact with the skin.

3. Position the BabySonic probe in line with the belly button, just above your knicker line. The wall of the uterus can be found by running your fingers lightly from the pelvic bone upwards towards the navel.

4. Point the probe downwards and you should be able to hear either baby's heartbeat (like the sound of galloping horses) or the whooshing sound of the blood flow to the placenta. You may also pick-up your own heartbeat, or the sounds of baby's gymnastics as baby crashes and bumps from one side to another.

5. Take your own pulse rate , this will help you distinguish whose heartbeat is whose. This should be easy as baby's heartbeat is nearly twice as fast as yours.

6. If you are carrying twins, it may be difficult to distinguish between the heartbeats. It is best to count the heartbeats and find two different rates.

7. Be Patient! Move the probe slowly as any rapid movement of the probe may cause BabySonic to pass over baby's heartbeat. The fetal heartbeat is heard best through the baby's back, so the baby must have his back facing up for the heartbeat to be detected easily.

8. If you can't hear anything, then don't panic. Often, especially early on, pre 20-weeks, it can be difficult to detect the baby's heartbeat. During the early weeks of pregnancy the fetus is often a lot lower than many people imagine. In fact, it's not uncommon for the uterus and fetus to be obscured behind the pelvic bone during the first couple of months. It is also not uncommon to have a retroverted uterus, that is, a uterus that is tipped or tilted backwards away from the belly making it very dificult to pick-up the baby's heartbeat down that low.

9. If you've heard or seen baby's heartbeat at the Doctor's or during an ante-natal visit, you might start listening at this spot.

10. If unsuccessful, try going for a walk or doing some other activity to encourage the baby to change position. Your weight, over or under, may also affect the ability to hear baby's heartbeat clearly.

Remember: BabySonic is not intended to diagnose baby's condition, and should not be relied upon for ensuring baby's wellbeing and safety. Should you have any concerns about baby's condition consult your doctor or heatlh professional immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Doppler?

A Doppler is a device that will allow you to listen to your baby’s heartbeat through the use of ultrasound. The BabySonic Doppler has been designed to detect the baby’s heartbeat to allow expectant mothers to listen to and share the wonder of pregnancy with their family and friends. Even older siblings can get to join in and start to develop that all-important bond with the newest member of the family.

How long have they been around?

Ultrasound has been used safely for over 30 years. Dopplers have been used successfully for many years by hospitals and midwives and are now available for personal use. Historically, mothers-to-be have only had the option to rent Dopplers, the introduction of BabySonic means that they can now afford to buy them instead. Personal baby Dopplers are growing in popularity and we have worked very hard to ensure that BabySonic is one of the very highest quality and best value products on the market.

When will I be able to hear my baby’s heartbeat?

BabySonic’s advanced technology allows you to detect the fetal heartbeat from as early as 8 weeks, though normally heard around week 12.

Is BabySonic waterproof?

The BabySonic probe and its lead are waterproof and suitable for waterbirths, the unit itself however should be kept dry.

Can I record the heartbeat?

Yes. With the appropriate audio leads, you can record to an external recorder or onto your PC or laptop.

How easy is it to pick up the heartbeat?

The BabySonic has been developed using the very best technology. The BabySonic will almost always find the heartbeat first time, every time, something that is of the utmost importance in reassuring expectant mothers. It is often during these early stages of pregnancy when many expectant mothers seek the added reassurance of a Doppler. Whilst it’s not designed to replace a doctor or midwife, using the BabySonic means that expectant mothers can listen and check their baby’s heartbeat whenever and wherever they like, without having to visit a clinic.

What if I am expecting twins?

If you are carrying twins, it may be difficult to distinguish between heartbeats. It is best to count the heartbeats and find two different rates. With a little practice you will find the two different rates.

What is included with the BabySonic Doppler?

The BabySonic Doppler is lightweight and extremely portable and comes complete with its own uniquely designed discreet carry case. For added convenience, it also comes complete with everything you will need – including ultrasound gel, user manual, battery, waterproof transducer probe, necklace earphones and 2-year warranty. It also comes with a £250.00 free competition draw entry!
